Having been unable to visit Seletar reservoir due to lack of recent rainfall, we turned one big, sad frown upside down and have had a super week learning all about conserving water.
We began the week talking about our lifestyles and habits and how we all, at times, waste water. The biggest problem being how much drinking water wasted when no longer thirsty.
From this we spent the rest of the week considering ways in which water can be saved. In K1LaD we know now to only fill our cups half full, and then fill up with more if we need to. Any left overs could be used to water the thirsty plants. The children also made links to their understanding of evaporation, and they now know that watering plants in the middle of the day is a bad idea!
Perhaps the biggest achievement of the week was the K1's visiting the "big children" to educate them about saving water. Once again, K1 came up trumps in being the teachers, bravely sharing their ideas with students in the junior, middle and high schools. Afterwards, all the K1's were invited to listen to a talk by Mr Kenny - a facilities member of staff - who explained to the children how UWCSEA works to save water. An astonishing fact: this schools uses up to 50,000 litres of water per day on air-conditioning. Also, there's a lot more to the astroturf at UWCSEA than meets the eye, perhaps ask your child how this special astroturf saves water...
Finally, take a look at these super, savvy savers of water - the K1's through this video link.
